Bruce Levenson is no longer the owner of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, but he’s still fighting a battle regarding the sale of the team that happened just last year. Levenson along with Atlanta Hawks Basketball & Entertainment (AHBE), has found himself in a court battle against the franchise’s former insurance company regarding a policy he says was not honored by them. According to AJC, AHBE filed the claim after the sale of the Hawks was made and they elected to buyout former General Manager Danny Ferry’s contract. Such a move was provided for in the insurance policy, but thus far the insurance company doesn’t seem to see it that way. Bruce Levenson and AHBE are taking this matter to court where they hope to receive compensation for damages done by the insurance company.

Bruce Levenson was the owner of the Atlanta Hawks from 2004 to 2015, and also owned the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers from 2004 to 2011, http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/11493472/jason-whitlock-bruce-levenson-atlanta-hawks . Before he became a professional sports franchise owner, he started up a major media conglomerate. Levenson had been a reporter for the Washington Star while attending law school back in the 1970s, and in 1977 he and his friend, Ed Peskowitz launched Unified Communications Group (UCG). This company owned several newsletters spanning various industries, and became the parent company to TechTarget and GasBuddy. Levenson also sat on the board at BIA Digital Partners.

Bruce Levenson is also a philanthropist who has chaired non-profit groups aimed at helping inner city families. According to PR Newswire, one such program is part of the Holocaust Memorial Museum called “Bringing the Lessons Home.” This program teaches young people about the significance of the Holocaust and helps them learn how to explain it to others and even become tour guides at the museum. Levenson is also active in Jewish organizations such as Seeds of Peace and Birthright Israel, and even formed a coalition of Jewish Americans who wrote letters to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about working towards a peace goal with Secretary of State John Kerry.
